Zhangye

In Gansu province

Zhangye is an oasis city on the Hexi Corridor of Gansu, a key stop on the ancient Silk Road amid the Qilian Mountains. It is world-famous for its Danxia landform, where mineral-streaked sandstone hills glow in bands of red, orange, and yellow. The city's Giant Buddha Temple houses China's largest indoor reclining clay Buddha, dating to the Western Xia era. The climate is arid, with hot summers and cold winters. For an international student, Zhangye offers surreal desert scenery and Silk Road heritage.
