Wuyishan

In Fujian province

Wuyishan is a county-level city in the far north of Fujian, named after the surrounding Wuyi Mountains, one of very few sites inscribed by UNESCO for both natural and cultural value. Its Danxia landscape of red sandstone peaks is best seen from a bamboo-raft drift down the winding Nine-Bend River. The mountains are the birthplace of Wuyi rock tea (yancha), including the legendary Da Hong Pao, whose mother bushes still cling to a cliff face. Historically the area was a center of Neo-Confucian learning under the philosopher Zhu Xi, and the village of Xiamei was a starting point of the tea-trade route to Russia. Wuyishan Airport and a high-speed rail station bring visitors from across China to this compact tourism-driven city.
