Guangyuan

In Sichuan province

Guangyuan lies in the rugged mountains of northern Sichuan, where the ancient Shu Roads threaded the Qinling barrier toward the Central Plain. It is celebrated as the birthplace of Wu Zetian, China's only female emperor, honored at the cliffside Huangze Temple. The dramatic Jianmen Pass and the plank roads of Mingyue Gorge draw history lovers. The climate is humid subtropical. For an international student, Guangyuan offers imperial history, mountain scenery, and famed Jianmen tofu.
