📖 About the university

City University of Hong Kong (Dongguan) was formally established on 16 April 2024 when China's Ministry of Education approved it as an independently incorporated mainland-Hong Kong cooperative university, making it one of the newest members of the Greater Bay Area's growing network of Hong Kong-mainland joint campuses alongside The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou). It is located in Dongguan, a major manufacturing city in Guangdong between Guangzhou and Shenzhen, and it inherits City University of Hong Kong's internationally oriented teaching model, delivering all instruction in English. The university opened to its first cohort in 2024 with more than 500 students, initially offering four undergraduate majors, Computer Science and Technology, Intelligent Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, and Energy and Power Engineering, alongside about ten master's degree programs spanning computer science, materials engineering, civil and architectural engineering, biomedical engineering and data science. Its stated mission is to integrate high-quality mainland and Hong Kong educational resources, pursue interdisciplinary and frontier research, and cultivate innovative talent with both a global outlook and a strong sense of national identity, matching City University of Hong Kong's academic quality under a two-campuses-one-standard principle. Admission for the undergraduate program has expanded from an initial handful of provinces to cover a wider range of regions including Guangdong, Beijing, Fujian, Hubei, Sichuan, Shaanxi, Henan and Yunnan. As a brand-new research-intensive campus still building out its facilities and enrollment, it represents one of the most closely watched additions to China's higher-education landscape in the mid-2020s.

🌆 About Dongguan

Dongguan is a major industrial city in Guangdong province, sitting on the Pearl River Delta between Guangzhou and Shenzhen, and it has grown from a manufacturing hub known as the world's factory into an increasingly diversified, high-tech economy. The city has a subtropical monsoon climate with hot, humid summers and short, mild winters, and it is crisscrossed by rivers and canals linked to the Pearl River estuary. Dongguan is known for its electronics and toy manufacturing heritage, its many modern industrial parks, and cultural sites such as the Keyuan Garden and the Humen Opium War Museum, which commemorates the 1839 destruction of opium at Humen. In recent years the city has invested heavily in universities, research institutes and technology parks such as the Songshan Lake Science City, home to major research facilities including a synchrotron radiation source. Its central location within the Greater Bay Area, extensive expressway and high-speed rail links to Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Hong Kong, and relatively lower living costs make it an attractive base for students and researchers.
