📖 About the university

Hebei Petroleum University of Technology is a public university in Chengde, Hebei province, whose lineage traces back to 1903 and the Beiyang School of Arts and Sciences in Tianjin, which evolved over the following decades through Hebei Institute of Technology and its affiliated industrial schools; in 1958 the school's oil-industry programme was relocated from Tianjin to Chengde and became Chengde Petroleum School, later Chengde Petroleum College. In January 2021 the Ministry of Education approved the merger of the independent Hebei University of Technology City College with the vocational-track Chengde Petroleum College to form the present public, vocational-bachelor's institution, directly administered by the Hebei provincial government. The university enrolls more than 15,000 students and employs over 2,400 faculty and staff, and its programmes are organised around petroleum engineering, mechanical and electrical engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering and architecture, information engineering, and economics and management, disciplines that reflect both its historic petroleum-industry roots and its broader engineering base. It is not part of the Project 985, Project 211 or Double First-Class programmes, being instead one of Hebei's newer public vocational-bachelor's universities focused on applied engineering education.

The university operates across multiple campuses, with its main site in Chengde and additional campuses in Tianjin's Beichen district and in Langfang, reflecting the geographically dispersed history of the institutions from which it was formed. Its century-long institutional history, running from the late-Qing Beiyang School of Arts and Sciences through decades as a dedicated petroleum training school to its current status as a comprehensive vocational-bachelor's university, gives it a distinctive depth of experience in technical and engineering education relative to many of China's newly created vocational universities. At present the university enrolls primarily domestic students preparing for careers in the energy, engineering and manufacturing sectors, and it does not advertise a dedicated Chinese-language pathway for international applicants. Its direct historical connection to China's petroleum industry, combined with its recent transformation into a full public vocational-bachelor's university, makes it one of the more specialised and historically grounded members of Hebei's higher-education system.

Chengde is a mountain city in northern Hebei famed as the site of the Mountain Resort, the vast Qing-dynasty imperial summer palace and UNESCO World Heritage complex, along with its surrounding Eight Outer Temples.
