Sichuan University of Media and Communications is a private undergraduate institution in the Pidu district of Chengdu and one of the largest specialised media and film schools in western China. It was founded in 1997 as the College of Broadcasting, Film and Television of Chengdu University of Technology, an independent college attached to a public university, and it applied in 2011 to become a free-standing institution; the Ministry of Education approved the conversion in 2013 and it was renamed Sichuan University of Media and Communications. It works from three sites: the main campus in Pidu district and two practice and production campuses, one in Pujiang county south of Chengdu, begun in 2011, and one established at Langzhong in northern Sichuan in 2015, with the three together covering about 2,398 mu. Roughly twenty teaching departments deliver about fifty undergraduate programmes across six discipline categories — literature, art, management, engineering, economics and education — including broadcasting and hosting, directing and drama and film literature, journalism, performance, music and dance, art design and animation, drama and film art design, photography, digital media technology, and communication combined with economics and trade. The distinctive feature is a production-driven curriculum: because the school grew out of a broadcasting college, teaching is organised around studios, television and film sets, editing suites and location shoots rather than lecture halls alone, and its graduation showcases and student productions circulate widely. Chengdu is a natural home for such a school, as the provincial capital carries a large concentration of broadcasters, streaming producers and advertising agencies, and the city's relaxed pace and low living costs are frequently cited by students. The motto is broad learning and steady practice, virtue and craft in equal measure, and teaching is conducted in Chinese for a mainly domestic intake.
