📖 About the university

Suzhou Vocational and Technical University is a public university in Suzhou, Jiangsu province, whose earliest antecedent, the Suzhou Industrial Vocational School, was founded in 1911; the modern institution was established as Suzhou Vocational University in May 1981, and in 2003 it absorbed Suzhou Education College, Suzhou Radio and Television University and Suzhou Workers' College of Science and Technology to form a larger, comprehensive vocational university. In May 2025 the Ministry of Education approved its upgrade to full vocational-bachelor's status under its present English name, Suzhou Vocational and Technical University, making it one of Jiangsu province's newest public bachelor's-level vocational institutions. The university operates across several campuses in Suzhou, including its main Shihu campus in the International Education Park as well as sites on Ganjiang Road, Tanshan and elsewhere in the historic city, and its academic departments include management engineering, economics and trade, mechanical and electrical engineering, computer engineering, electronic information engineering, and education and humanities. It is not part of the Project 985, Project 211 or Double First-Class programmes, functioning instead as an applied, career-oriented university serving the manufacturing and technology-rich Suzhou region.

Suzhou is one of the Yangtze Delta's most important manufacturing and electronics hubs, and the university's programmes in mechanical, electrical and computer engineering are closely aligned with the needs of the region's large advanced-manufacturing and technology industries. Its more than a century of institutional history, running from an early-twentieth-century industrial vocational school through several waves of consolidation to its current status as a comprehensive vocational-bachelor's university, gives it a longer track record than many of China's most recently created vocational institutions. At present it enrolls primarily domestic students preparing for technical and management careers and does not advertise a dedicated Chinese-language pathway for international applicants. Its deep local roots in Suzhou's industrial history, combined with its recent elevation to bachelor's-degree status, make it a notable example of an older vocational college evolving to meet the demands of contemporary applied higher education.
