He University, in Chinese the Liaoning He Medical College, is a private medical university in the Hunnan district of Shenyang, the capital of Liaoning, and one of very few Chinese medical schools built around ophthalmology. It was founded in September 1999 by He Wei, the ophthalmologist who created the He Eye Hospital group, in cooperation with Shenyang Medical College, as that college's He Eye Optometry School; in 2004 it became a nationally enrolling independent college renamed the School of Visual Science, moved onto its own Qipanshan-area campus in 2007, and in June 2011 converted into a free-standing undergraduate institution under its present name. By 2017 it taught more than 7,000 students in 19 bachelor and 13 vocational programmes spanning medicine, science, engineering, management, literature and art, organised into faculties of precision medicine, visual arts and life sciences plus schools of public health, international and continuing education. Clinical medicine and optometry remain the signature fields, supported by the group's eye hospitals as teaching bases. The school entered the World Directory of Medical Schools in 2018 as He University School of Clinical Medicine, signed a student-exchange agreement with Japan's Kyushu University in 2015, and has admitted international students to clinical medicine since 2017, with English-strengthened teaching in that programme and Japanese and Korean tracks in nursing and medical aesthetics.
