📖 About the university

Zhangjiakou University is a public provincial applied undergraduate institution in Zhangjiakou, northwestern Hebei, whose main disciplines are education, medicine and management, supported by literature, science, physical education and the arts. Its history begins in 1978 with the founding of the Zhangjiakou prefectural school for in-service teacher training, which was reorganised in May 1984 as the Zhangjiakou Prefectural College of Education and renamed Zhangjiakou College of Education in 1994. In July 2004 that college merged with the health technology branch of Hebei North University and the Zhangjiakou municipal workers' university to form a larger Zhangjiakou College of Education, and in April 2013 the Ministry of Education approved its conversion into the full undergraduate Zhangjiakou University. The university is organised into seventeen secondary colleges, including the schools of education, Chinese language and law, foreign languages, mathematics and information science, tourism and environment, economics and management, medicine, clinical medicine, nursing, fine arts, music, physical education, teacher education and Marxism, along with an innovation and entrepreneurship college. Two threads make it distinctive: a long teacher-training tradition, recognised in its status as a national training base for primary and secondary school teachers and a provincial training base for key teachers, and a medical and nursing arm inherited from the former health technology branch, which gives a small regional university an unusual combination of classroom pedagogy and clinical training. The third is geographical: Zhangjiakou co-hosted the snow events of the 2022 Winter Olympics at Chongli, and the university runs a dedicated School of Ice and Snow that ties its teaching to the winter-sports and mountain-tourism economy that the Games left behind. The setting itself is unusual for a Chinese campus — a city on the edge of the Inner Mongolian steppe, ringed by mountains and grassland, about an hour from Beijing by high-speed rail — and teaching is conducted in Chinese for a mainly domestic intake.
