Northwest Minzu University in Lanzhou, established in 1950, was the first minzu (nationalities) university founded in New China. Located on the ancient Silk Road, it specialises in the languages, histories and cultures of the peoples of northwest China, including Tibetan, Mongolian and Islamic studies.
