📖 About the university

Tibet Minzu University, founded in 1958, is the first university established for the Tibet Autonomous Region and, unusually, is located not in Tibet but in Xianyang near Xi'an in Shaanxi. It was created to train ethnic-Tibetan cadres and professionals, and it remains a leading centre for Tibetan studies, ethnic studies, Tibetan language and Tibetan medicine, alongside management, literature and information engineering. Most of its students are of Tibetan and other ethnic backgrounds bound for careers in Tibet. Its location on the Guanzhong plain provides a lowland base for educating students from the high plateau. The university welcomes international students interested in Tibetan culture and ethnic studies.
