📖 About the university

Zhanjiang University of Science and Technology is a large private university in Mazhang district of Zhanjiang, the deep-water port city on the Leizhou Peninsula in far western Guangdong. It began in 1999, when the brothers Li Min and Li Qiao, Thai-Chinese entrepreneurs returning to their home region, founded western Guangdong's first private education group, the Zhanjiang Cunjin Education Group — named after the city's famous Cunjin Bridge — and in December of that year opened the Cunjin College of Guangdong Ocean University in partnership with that university. The college was raised to undergraduate independent-college status in April 2006, becoming the first overseas-Chinese-funded university in western Guangdong, obtained degree-awarding rights in 2011, and in 2021 converted into a free-standing private institution under its present name, formally unveiled on 16 May 2021. With 38,162 students reported in 2025 it is among the biggest private universities in the province, teaching on two campuses in Mazhang district: the original Mazhang campus opened in 2008 and the large Xinhu campus, planned on 1,622 mu and in use since 2017. Fourteen schools run from economics, finance, accounting, management and foreign languages to architectural engineering, intelligent manufacturing, education, media, music and dance and a school of traditional Chinese medicine. The motto is to hold to what is right and act with agility; instruction is in Chinese for a domestic intake.
