📖 About the university
East University of Heilongjiang is a private undergraduate university in Harbin and the first privately run higher-education institution established in Heilongjiang province. It was founded in 1992 under the name East University by a group of retired educators from the province, and it was renamed East University of Heilongjiang in 1995 after receiving provincial approval in July 1993 to enrol junior-college students. In April 2000 the provincial education department allowed it to run undergraduate programmes in cooperation with Heilongjiang University, and in 2003 the Ministry of Education approved its upgrade to a regular undergraduate institution, making it one of the first batch of private undergraduate colleges in China; it received the right to confer bachelor's degrees in December 2006. In 2009 the provincial government designated it a characteristic applied-science undergraduate construction university, and in 2011 the State Council's degree office approved it as a pilot unit for training professional master's students — one of only five private colleges in the country in that first group — and it now holds professional master's authorisation in biology and pharmacy and in international business. The university reports about 12,829 full-time students, of whom roughly 12,782 are undergraduates, 39 are professional master's candidates and a small number are international students, taught by a staff of around 622 on a campus of some 590,000 square metres with about 195,000 square metres of buildings. Teaching is organised into nine faculties — computer science and electrical engineering, food and environmental engineering, architecture and civil engineering, mechanical and electrical engineering, economics and trade, management, humanities and social sciences, foreign languages, and art and design — with roughly 47 undergraduate majors and a strongly applied orientation covering food and dairy engineering, bioengineering, polymer materials, civil and road engineering, elevator engineering, accounting including an ACCA track, international trade and exhibition economics, Russian and Japanese, and digital animation. A point of pride in its own account is that it grew for its first two decades without outside capital, funding expansion entirely from tuition, and Russian is a natural strength for a Harbin institution given the city's long-standing links across the border.

🌆 About Harbin
Harbin is the capital of Heilongjiang province in China's far northeast, a city shaped by strong Russian influence in its architecture and culture. With a metropolitan population of around ten million, it sits on the Songhua River and is often called the ice city. Its climate is severely continental, with warm summers but long, extremely cold, snowy winters that make it famous for winter tourism. The landmark Saint Sophia Cathedral, the European-style Central Street, Sun Island, and the spectacular Ice and Snow World festival draw visitors from across the country. Local food blends Northeastern staples like sweet-and-sour guobaorou with Russian-influenced red sausage and dense dalieba bread. A growing metro, Taiping International Airport, and high-speed rail connect it to Changchun, Shenyang, and Beijing. For an international student, Harbin offers affordable living, respected universities, and a truly distinctive winter culture, though newcomers should be ready for genuinely harsh cold.
