📖 About the university

Hunan Police Academy is the full-time public-security undergraduate institution of Hunan province, located at Xingsha in the Changsha Economic and Technological Development Zone and administered under the Hunan provincial education authorities together with the provincial police service. It was founded in September 1949 as the police school of the public security department of the provisional Hunan provincial government, and its name changed repeatedly through the following decades: it became the Hunan Provincial Public Security Cadre School in 1950, the Hunan Provincial Political and Legal Cadre School in 1958, closed between 1966 and 1973, reopened as a cadre school, was raised to junior-college level as the Hunan Provincial Public Security College in 1984, and became Hunan Public Security Higher Vocational College in 1993. In February 1999 that college merged with the Hunan Provincial People's Police School, and in February 2010 the Ministry of Education approved its upgrade to full undergraduate status under the present name. The campus covers about 700.5 mu with some 210,000 square metres of buildings, and the academy teaches more than 5,000 students with a teaching staff of about 337. It runs seven departments — criminal investigation, public security administration, criminal forensic technology, traffic management, law, public administration and computer science — offering five undergraduate majors alongside fifteen junior-college majors, and it combines degree education in restricted police specialisms with ordinary non-police programmes and in-service training for serving officers. The academy is one of the practical police training bases designated by the Ministry of Public Security, has produced more than thirty thousand graduates for police units across Hunan since 1949, and is popularly called the cradle of Hunan's police officers; its motto is loyalty, truth, wisdom and courage. Because admission to Chinese public-security institutions runs through the national police recruitment system, the academy is a Chinese-language, domestic-intake school rather than a destination for international degree students.
