📖 About the university
Lanzhou University (LZU) is a public research university in Lanzhou, the capital of Gansu province in north-west China, founded in 1909, and it is the leading comprehensive university in the country's remote north-western region. It is included in Project 985, Project 211, and the Double First-Class initiative. LZU is especially known for chemistry, atmospheric sciences, ecology, physics, and grassland science, and it has a strong record of research relevant to arid environments and the natural sciences. Despite its inland location, it has long maintained a reputation for academic excellence and dedicated scholarship.
Set along the Yellow River in Lanzhou, the university offers a distinctive setting for study in a region of striking landscapes, with modern campuses and research stations. LZU maintains international collaborations and hosts a growing international student community. International applicants can study the Chinese language and prepare for the HSK, and the university offers a range of degree programs, including some English-taught options at the graduate level in the sciences. It is well suited to academically strong students interested in chemistry, the environmental and atmospheric sciences, ecology, or fundamental research, especially those drawn to studying in western China.

🌆 About Lanzhou
Lanzhou is the capital of Gansu province and a historic city on the ancient Silk Road, stretched narrowly along the banks of the Yellow River. With a metropolitan population of around four million, it is northwest China's key transport and industrial gateway toward Central Asia. The climate is cold semi-arid, with warm, dry summers and cold, dry winters and relatively little rainfall. Landmarks include the Yellow River waterfront, the iron Zhongshan Bridge, White Pagoda Mountain overlooking the city, and the traditional waterwheel park. Lanzhou is nationally famous for its hand-pulled beef noodles, and its sizeable Hui Muslim community means halal food and mosques are easy to find. A new metro line, Zhongchuan International Airport, and high-speed rail connect it toward Xi'an, Xining, and Urumqi. For an international student, and especially a Muslim one, Lanzhou offers low living costs, a welcoming halal food culture, and a strong sense of Silk Road history.
