📖 About the university

Guangxi Science and Technology Normal University is a public teacher-training university run by the government of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, with its main campus in the Xingbin district of Laibin and a second campus in nearby Liuzhou. Its history reaches back to Yishan Normal Junior College, founded in 1958, which moved to Liuzhou a year later, stopped admitting students in 1962, and was rebuilt from 1970 onward as Liuzhou Prefecture Normal School before being upgraded to junior-college level in 1984 and renamed Liuzhou Teachers College in 1994. The Liuzhou School of Finance and Economics was absorbed in 2005, teaching in Laibin began in 2012, in April 2015 the Ministry of Education approved the upgrade to a full undergraduate institution under its present name, and in 2022 the university was placed directly under the autonomous region's government. Around 16,000 full-time students were enrolled as of 2022, and teacher-education students accounted for roughly 9,500 of them, about 56 per cent, which reflects the university's core mission of supplying teachers to schools across Laibin, Liuzhou and the surrounding counties. By 2022 it offered 31 undergraduate programmes covering education, engineering, law, literature, science, management and the arts, taught through schools such as Education and Psychological Science, Food and Biochemical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Culture and Communication, Foreign Languages, Economics and Management, and Vocational and Technical Education. Applied research is tied closely to the region: the university built the Guangxi Jinxiu Dayao Mountain Yao Culture Research Base together with the government of Jinxiu Yao Autonomous County, and it also runs a regional engineering technology centre for sugar resources and a centre for intelligent information computing and its applications. Laibin lies in a part of central Guangxi where Zhuang and Yao communities form the large majority of the population, and the university's teacher-education and vocational-teacher programmes are built around the needs of those county schools.

🌆 About Laibin

Laibin is a prefecture-level city in central Guangxi, created on 28 December 2002 when the former Liuzhou administrative region was reorganised, and it is often referred to as Guizhong, meaning central Guangxi. The Hongshui River, the main upper course of the Pearl River system, runs through Xingbin district, Xincheng county and Heshan city, and the area's resources have earned it nicknames such as Guangxi's coal capital and China's sugar capital. Zhuang and Yao people make up more than seventy per cent of the population, and Jinxiu Yao Autonomous County in the Dayao Mountains was the earliest Yao autonomous county established in China, which is why Laibin also calls itself the world's Yao capital. The setting is subtropical, with hot, wet summers and mild winters, and living costs are low even by Guangxi standards.
