📖 About the university
Shandong Foreign Affairs Vocational University is a private vocational-bachelor's university headquartered in the coastal city of Weihai, Shandong province, with a second campus in the provincial capital Jinan. It was founded in 1999 as the Shandong Foreign Affairs Translation Vocational College, reflecting an original mission of training translators and foreign-trade personnel for Shandong's export-oriented economy, and in May 2019 the Ministry of Education approved its conversion into a full vocational-bachelor's university under its present name, making it one of the first group of institutions nationally authorised to award vocational bachelor's degrees. Given its origins as a language and foreign-affairs training college, the university's programmes remain concentrated in foreign languages and translation, international business and trade, tourism management, information technology and art and design, fields that connect directly to Shandong's role as one of China's major trading provinces. As a private institution it is not part of the Project 985, Project 211 or Double First-Class programmes, and it functions as a regional, applied vocational-bachelor's university rather than a research-focused institution.
The university's dual-campus structure across Weihai, a coastal port city with historic ties to international trade and shipping, and Jinan, the provincial capital, allows it to serve students across different parts of Shandong province. Its name and founding mission around foreign languages and international business give it a somewhat more outward-facing orientation than many of Shandong's newer vocational universities, even though it currently enrolls primarily domestic Chinese students. It does not, at this stage, advertise a dedicated Chinese-language pathway specifically for international degree-seeking students, and detailed public information on its faculty size and campus facilities remains limited compared with longer-established Chinese universities. Nonetheless, as one of the earliest institutions nationally to be upgraded to vocational-bachelor's status, in 2019, it represents an important early example of China's push to build applied, career-oriented universities alongside its traditional research-university system.
