📖 About the university

Hong Kong Chu Hai College traces its origins to Chu Hai University, founded in Guangzhou in 1947 by a group of prominent Republican-era educators, financiers, and legislators dedicated to rebuilding China's higher education after the Second World War. Following the Chinese Communist Party's takeover of Guangzhou in 1949, the institution relocated its teaching staff and resources to Hong Kong, where it continued as Chu Hai College, later maintaining close ties with Taiwan for decades before pursuing independent recognition. In 2004 the Hong Kong government approved the college to award its own degrees and recognised it as an Approved Post Secondary College, and in November 2022 it was formally renamed Hong Kong Chu Hai College following a further government review. Since August 2016 the college has occupied a purpose-built campus in Castle Peak Bay, Tuen Mun, funded partly through a HK$200 million donation from the Hong Kong Jockey Club, and it is organised into three faculties: Arts and Social Sciences, Science and Technology, and Business, offering close to twenty bachelor's and master's degree programmes. The college's name, meaning "Pearl Sea", reflects both its original riverside site in Guangzhou and its founding ideal that students should be as pure as pearls and as deep in knowledge as the sea, an ethos it retains as one of only seventeen Hong Kong institutions authorised to confer bachelor's degrees. It is best suited to students seeking a small, values-oriented college with a rare direct lineage to a pre-1949 mainland Chinese university.
