Shanghai International Studies University (SISU), founded in December 1949 as New China's first higher institution of foreign-language education, is one of the country's most prestigious universities for languages, translation and global studies. It began as the Shanghai Russian School and grew into a comprehensive university now teaching 52 languages, from major world languages to rare classical tongues. SISU is a national “211 Project” and “Double First-Class” university, and its foreign-languages and literature programme received an A+ rating, tying for first in China. Its Graduate Institute of Interpretation and Translation is a member of the elite CIUTI network and trains conference interpreters for the UN and international bodies.
