Liaocheng University, founded in 1974, is a comprehensive provincial university in western Shandong and the main institution of higher learning in the historic canal city of Liaocheng. Growing out of a teacher-training college, it now spans the arts, sciences, engineering, agriculture, education, business and medicine. It is the leading centre of education and research for the surrounding rural region and trains many of the area's teachers and professionals. Its large campus lies within the 'Water City', ringed by the lake and canals of the old town.
