📖 About the university

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) traces its origins to 1937, when it began as the Government Trade School, and it became a full university in 1994 after decades as Hong Kong Polytechnic. Its densely built campus in Hung Hom, Kowloon, sits beside the cross-harbour tunnel and includes the striking Jockey Club Innovation Tower designed by Zaha Hadid. As one of the largest publicly funded universities in Hong Kong, PolyU emphasises applied, profession-oriented education across faculties such as engineering, business, construction and environment, health and social sciences, humanities, and design, with instruction in English. It ranks 54th in the QS World University Rankings 2026 and is world-renowned for its School of Hotel and Tourism Management, consistently rated among the very best globally, as well as for design, civil and aerospace engineering, nursing, and optometry. PolyU has strong ties to industry and even contributed instruments to China's lunar and Mars exploration missions. With a large international and professional student community, it is well suited to students seeking practical, career-focused programmes closely linked to real-world industries.

🌆 About Hong Kong

Hong Kong is a Special Administrative Region on the southern coast of China and one of the world's leading financial, trading, and logistics hubs, where Cantonese Chinese culture blends seamlessly with a British-influenced international outlook. Built around one of the finest deep-water harbours in the world, the territory packs a dramatic skyline of skyscrapers against steep green mountains and outlying islands, with Victoria Harbour at its heart. Its climate is humid subtropical, bringing hot, humid summers with occasional typhoons and mild, dry winters. English and Chinese are both official languages, and the city is famous for its efficient MTR metro, double-decker trams and buses, and Hong Kong International Airport, one of the busiest in the world. Everyday life mixes Michelin-starred dining and dim sum teahouses with street markets, temples, hiking trails, and beaches, all within easy reach. For an international student, Hong Kong offers a concentration of world-ranked universities, a genuinely global environment, and easy travel across Asia, though living costs and rents are among the highest in the region.
