Construction began in March 2000 and the line opened for service on 30 September 2003; it is the terminus of the roughly 100 km Suidong local railway, which branches off the Binsui trunk line at Suiyang station. The station is about 632 km from Harbin and 268 km from Mudanjiang, serving Dongning, nicknamed "Little Jiangnan" for its mild climate near the Russian border.
