西关清真大寺
📍 Lanzhou · Chengguan District 🏛️ Ming dynasty (Hongwu/Yongle era); rebuilt Qing Kangxi 23 (1684); current hall completed 1990 👥 3,000+

📜 About & history

The Xiguan Grand Mosque was originally a 'guest mosque' (客寺) serving Muslim merchants on the ancient Silk Road, and is regarded as the heart of Muslim religious life in Lanzhou. First built in the Ming dynasty and rebuilt under the Kangxi Emperor in 1684, the old mosque was demolished in 1967 and a new complex was completed in April 1990 with a four-storey minaret and domes. It has long been counted among China's most beautiful mosques, its main hall seating over 3,000 worshippers. In 2023 the exterior was remodelled in a plainer style as part of the national 'sinicization' program.

🕌 Prayer & visiting

Dress modestly (cover shoulders and knees; women should cover the head), remove shoes before entering the prayer hall, and non-Muslim visitors should avoid prayer times or ask permission.
