Dali's South Gate Mosque is one of the oldest mosques in the city, first built in the Yuan dynasty and counted among China's hundred ancient mosques, with a mention in the travel diary of Ming explorer Xu Xiake. Before the Du Wenxiu Rebellion it stood on Cangping Street and was known for its 「northern and southern schools」. Returning Muslims rebuilt the mosque in the early Republican period, completing the present structure in 1916. Passing through its gate one enters Chinese-style courtyards with sloping eaves, wing rooms and a timber prayer hall.

Within walking distance inside Dali Ancient City; enter the South Gate and follow the main street. Buses to Dali Ancient City stop nearby.
Located in the tourist heart of Dali Ancient City, with halal restaurants nearby, convenient for Arabic-speaking travellers.
About 20-30 minutes by car or bus from Xiaguan (downtown Dali City) to the ancient town's south gate.
