According to academic research on the history of Islam in Tibet, the region historically had 11 mosques in total: six in Lhasa, two in Shigatse, one in Qamdo, and one each in Shannan's Tsetang (Zedang) and Ngari's Guge. The Zedang Mosque in Shannan City serves a small local Muslim community of Hui and Kashmiri descent, traditionally known in Tibet as 'Kache'. The current building is comparatively modern, built on the legacy of an older Muslim presence in the area stretching back generations, when Shannan lay along historic trade routes linking Tibet with inland China.

The mosque is used for the five daily prayers and Friday Jumu'ah by Shannan's small Muslim community. Given its modest size and residential setting, visitors are encouraged to coordinate in advance and dress modestly.

🚇 How to reach the mosque
Local city buses serve Zedang Town in Naidong District; the mosque is within walking distance of the town center.
There is no Arab expat district or large Muslim community in Shannan; nearby Lhasa (about 2 hours by road) has Tibet's older, larger mosques and more halal dining options.
Zedang Town is itself Shannan's downtown core; the mosque is in Naidong District, close to the city center.
Given Tibet's high altitude, visitors should allow time to acclimatize before visiting.
