📍 Shenyang · Shenhe District 🏛️ 1662 (Kangxi 1); earliest structures date to the late Ming / early Qing (Tiancong era, 1627-1636)

📜 About & history

The South Mosque is the oldest and largest mosque in Shenyang and the most prominent Islamic house of worship in all of Northeast China. It was founded by Tie Kui (Tie Kuiwu), a Hui military officer of the early Qing who funded its construction, with the core buildings raised in the late Ming to early Qing period and formally established around 1662 (Kangxi 1). Expanded under Kangxi (1662-1722) and repaired under Jiaqing (1796-1820), it covers roughly 7,000 square metres in four successive courtyards containing a grand prayer hall, lecture halls, ablution rooms and a striking hexagonal Moon-Watching Tower (Wangyue Lou) about 30 metres high topped by a crescent. It remains an active congregational mosque at the heart of Shenyang's historic Hui quarter west of the old city.
