Qingdao Mosque

青岛清真寺
📍 Qingdao · Shibei District 🏛️ 1929 (orig.); present mosque opened 2007

📜 About & history

Islam came to modern Qingdao with Hui migrants in the early 20th century; in 1929 Imam Wang Wanying, Mu Huating and others raised funds to convert a two-storey building at 9 Changzhou Road into the city's first mosque, which served for nearly eighty years. As the community outgrew it, a new, fully modern mosque was built on about 15 mu of land granted by the municipality on Tong'an Road; it was completed in 2006 and opened on 3 September 2007, when the Changzhou Road mosque closed. The present mosque at 562 Tong'an Road is now the main place of worship for Qingdao's Muslim community. The former Changzhou Road building survives as a listed historic structure.
