Harbin Mosque, originally the Harbin East Mosque (formerly Binjiang Mosque), began in 1897 (Guangxu 23) as five thatched rooms bought by Hui migrants who followed the Chinese Eastern Railway to the Fujiadian (today Daowai) district. Under Imam Bai Yusheng, and with backing from the noted Imam Ma Songting, funds were raised to build the present grand prayer hall, completed and further expanded in the 1930s. The main Arabic-Byzantine-style hall of about 426 square metres rises 13 metres and holds 500-600 worshippers; it is the largest mosque in Heilongjiang and is often called the only fully Arabic-style mosque among China's older mosques. In 1958 the former East, West and Women's mosques were consolidated into this single Harbin City Mosque, and in 2007 it was listed as a Harbin protected heritage building.

Numerous buses serve the Jingyu Street / old Daowai area around the mosque; confirm route numbers locally.
From Harbin Railway Station it is about 4 km northeast; a taxi takes roughly 15 minutes.
In the historic Old Daowai district; about 2 km east of Central Street (Zhongyang Dajie), an easy taxi ride or a walk through the old town.
