Fancheng Mosque stands in the Hui Muslim quarter around Youyi Street in the Qiaotou area of Fancheng, on the north bank of the Han River. A stone tablet inside records that the mosque dates from the Yongle reign of the early Ming dynasty, making it one of the oldest and largest mosques in Hubei. It was repaired repeatedly under the Qing, in 1792, 1843 and 1867, and after damage during the Cultural Revolution the government funded a full restoration in 1982. Built as a traditional Chinese courtyard complex, it has a three-tier eaved gate tower and today serves a congregation of more than 2,000 Muslims.

Five daily prayers are held, with the Friday (Jumu'ah) congregation around midday. Seasonal prayer times are posted at the mosque.
