Huangcheng Mosque

成都皇城清真寺
📍 Chengdu · Qingyang District 🏛️ Qing Kangxi era (1667); relocated 1998

📜 About & history

Huangcheng ('Imperial City') Mosque takes its name from the former Ming-dynasty Shu princely palace, called the 'Imperial City' by locals, near which the original mosque stood. First built in the Qing Kangxi period (1667) with support from Yunnanese Muslims, it grew into the largest mosque in Sichuan and one of China's noted historic mosques. Damaged during the warlord conflicts of 1917, it was later restored, then relocated in 1998 to its present site just west of Tianfu Square. The 1998 building blends Arab-style domes and minarets with imitation Ming-Qing Chinese architecture over roughly 5,600 square metres. It remains the principal mosque and community centre for Chengdu's Hui Muslims.
