Changde Mosque was first founded in 1404, the second year of the Ming Yongle reign, its original site standing beside the Jade Belt Bridge on Minzu Street a few hundred metres from the present location. Because it adjoined a Han Chinese temple, it was moved and rebuilt in 1645 on land bought from a Hui family, the present site. Beams in the prayer hall bear inscriptions dating rebuilding works to the Shunzhi and Xianfeng reigns of the Qing. Over its history the mosque changed its name three times; a major reconstruction completed in December 2004 gives it a total floor area of over 2,000 square metres. Changde is one of Hunan's most concentrated Muslim areas, with several thousand Hui and Uyghur Muslims in the city.
