My residence permit expired while I was abroad — what now? · Yalla China

🤝 Governing law: 出境入境管理法 / Exit and Entry Administration Law

Can you return on an expired residence permit if you travelled?

Illustrative, general educational examples — not real specific facts and not legal advice; for awareness only. For an actual situation, consult a licensed lawyer.
Situation: A foreigner working in Shanghai travelled home; while abroad, his residence permit expired. He tried to return but was refused because the permit was no longer valid for entry. Rule: a residence permit allows entry and exit only while valid; once expired it is void and cannot be used to return. The fix: apply to renew before travelling or well before expiry; if it expires while you are abroad you will need a fresh visa (work/visit) and then re-issue the residence permit inside China. Lesson: watch your permit's expiry and don't travel near it without renewing.

🎓 The lesson / takeaway

Renew before travelling near expiry; an expired permit can't get you back in.
