Yining

In Xinjiang province

Yining, also known by its Uyghur name Ghulja, is the capital of the Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture in northwestern Xinjiang, near the Kazakhstan border in the fertile Ili River valley. Greener and milder than the rest of Xinjiang, it is a colourful, multi-ethnic city of Uyghur, Kazakh, Han and Hui communities, known for its pastel-painted 'Liuxing' quarter, tree-lined streets and lively bazaars. The famous Sayram Lake and Nalati grasslands lie within the prefecture. For an international student, Yining offers rich frontier culture, gentle river-valley scenery and a gateway to Central Asia.
