Yingtan

In Jiangxi province

Yingtan is a small prefecture in northeastern Jiangxi that grew up as a railway junction on lines linking Zhejiang, Fujian and the interior. Its defining site is Mount Longhu, the birthplace of religious Taoism, where Zhang Daoling is said to have founded the Way of the Celestial Masters. The mountain's red Danxia sandstone cliffs and the Luxi River are inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, and cliff-side hanging coffins over 2,000 years old survive there. The nearby town of Shangqing preserves the Celestial Master's Mansion, long the seat of Taoism's hereditary leaders. Yingtan North station places the city on the national high-speed rail network.
