Yantai

In Shandong province

Yantai is a scenic port city on the northern coast of Shandong's Jiaodong Peninsula, facing the Bohai and Yellow Seas. A treaty port since the 1860s, it became China's first modern wine region when the Changyu (Zhangyu) winery was founded here in 1892, and grapes and wine remain a signature industry. The nearby Penglai Pavilion is legendary in Chinese lore as the mythical home of the Eight Immortals and a mirage-famed 'fairyland by the sea.' Yantai's clean beaches, mild maritime climate and fresh seafood make it a popular summer resort. Its economy also rests on shipbuilding, autos, electronics and the busy Yantai Port, with a bullet-train link along the coast.
