Xiaogan

In Hubei province

Xiaogan sits just northwest of Wuhan on the Jianghan plain of eastern Hubei and takes its name, meaning 'filial piety,' from the legend of Dong Yong, an exemplar of filial devotion said to hail from the area. It is closely tied to Wuhan's metropolitan region and shares its Tianhe airport. The city is famous for its sweet fermented rice wine (mijiu) and sesame candy. Yunmeng county preserves important ancient Chu-state archaeological sites and bamboo-slip texts. Agriculture, food processing and salt-chemical industries support the economy.
