Ulanqab
Ulanqab lies on the grasslands of central Inner Mongolia, straddling the transition from the Mongolian plateau to the North China Plain just northwest of Hohhot. Cool summers and volcanic soils have made it China's self-styled potato capital, and its high, windswept plains host some of the country's largest wind farms, especially on the Huitengxile grassland. The recently protected Ulanhada volcanoes, a cluster of near-perfect conical cones, have become a striking geological attraction. Traditional Mongolian grassland tourism thrives at Gegentala, site of a famous summer Naadam festival. Its cool, dry climate and proximity to Beijing have also drawn a growing cluster of data centers. Ulanqab Jining Airport and high-speed rail connect the city to Hohhot and the capital.
