Shaoyang

In Hunan province

Shaoyang is a large prefecture in southwestern Hunan, one of the province's most populous and historically a frontier between Han settlers and Miao and Yao communities. Its outstanding natural landmark is Mount Langshan, a UNESCO World Heritage Danxia landform of dramatic red sandstone pillars and gorges. Wugang is an old walled town famous for its marinated tofu. The highland Nanshan Pasture offers rare alpine grassland scenery in subtropical China. The economy blends agriculture, forestry and light manufacturing.
