Qamdo lies in eastern Tibet where three great rivers, the Yangtze, Mekong, and Salween, run in parallel gorges through the mountains. Historically the heart of the Kham region, it is a meeting point of Tibetan, Han, and Naxi cultures on the old Tea Horse Road. The grand Galden Jampaling Monastery has anchored the town for centuries, while the turquoise Ranwu Lake mirrors surrounding glaciers. Its Bamda Airport is among the highest in the world. The climate is cold and high-altitude. For an international student, Qamdo offers dramatic plateau scenery and living Tibetan Buddhist culture.
