Lüliang

In Shanxi province

Lüliang stretches along the eastern bank of the Yellow River in western Shanxi, taking its name from the Lüliang Mountains that run through it. The historic port town of Qikou, once a bustling hub of the Yellow River grain and goods trade, preserves streets of Ming and Qing courtyard houses and cave dwellings. Nearby Fenyang is home to Xinghua Village, birthplace of Fenjiu, one of China's most celebrated clear liquors, immortalized in a Tang poem. The granite peaks of Beiwudang Mountain hold Daoist temples and dramatic scenery. Long one of Shanxi's poorer coal regions, Lüliang has invested heavily in tourism and red-jujube farming. Lüliang Dawu Airport and rail links connect it to Taiyuan.
