Changchun

Changchun is the capital of Jilin province in China's northeast and a historic center of the country's automobile and film industries. Its metropolitan population is around nine million, and the city is known for wide, tree-lined boulevards and a planned, green layout. The climate is markedly seasonal, with short, warm summers and long, very cold, snowy winters that regularly fall well below freezing. Notable sights include the Puppet Emperor's Palace from the Manchukuo era, the leafy Nanhu Park, and the forested Jingyuetan reservoir on the city's edge. Local dishes reflect hearty Northeastern cuisine, such as sweet-and-sour guobaorou and warming sauerkraut stews. The city has a growing metro and light-rail network, an international airport at Longjia, and high-speed rail connections toward Beijing and Harbin. For an international student, Changchun offers a calmer, more affordable environment than the megacities, strong engineering and medical universities, and a genuine taste of northern Chinese winter life.
