The ruins of an ancient stone-walled city on the old Silk Road in the Pamir highlands, once the royal seat of the kingdom of Puli during the Han dynasty and later a Tang-dynasty frontier garrison post, with mudbrick ramparts still visible on a hilltop above the modern county town.
