A national AAAA5A-level scenic area made up of five interconnected lakes, six bridges and eighteen named viewpoints, covering about 20.91 sq km on the western edge of downtown Huizhou. Its history goes back to the Eastern Jin dynasty when the Buddhist Longxing Temple was built by the lakeshore, later renamed Kaiyuan Temple by Emperor Xuanzong of Tang, and in 1066 magistrate Chen Cheng enlarged the lake to roughly its present form. The lake is equally famous as the place of exile of the Song-dynasty poet Su Dongpo, whose writings and the causeway bridge named after him still commemorate his stay.
