A family temple built in 1255 by order of Emperor Lizong of the Southern Song for Kong Duanyou, the 48th-generation descendant of Confucius who fled south carrying the sage's wooden statue when the Jin army overran the northern capital. Known as the 'Southern Sect' temple to distinguish it from the original Confucius Temple in Qufu, Shandong, it is one of only two Confucius family temples officially recognised in China. The present complex on Xinqiao Street was rebuilt during the Ming dynasty and centres on the Dacheng Hall and a rear garden, and it has been listed as a national key cultural relic under state protection since 1996.
